For the political junkees among you, this is a heads up that my Blue Rubicon colleague Karin Robinson will be on both Sky News and Al Jazeera tonight to discuss the US midterm elections. Karin is Vice Chair of Democrats Abroad, and was a Regional Field Director for the Democrats in the 2008 election. Check her out from 10PM on Al Jazeera and from midnight to 2AM on Sky News.
I asked her what she thought about the election, and she told me this:
“The reality is, Obama and the Democrats have accomplished a tremendous amount over the past two years, with a historic health care reform, financial reform, a massive stimulus package, and the successful rescue of the entire US Auto industry. But, we are also facing a very weak economy and nearly 10% unemployment that has led to some understandable frustration on from the voters.
Having said that, I don’t know what the outcome of this election is going to be. And neither does anyone else. Election watchers should keep their eye on reports of Democratic get out the vote efforts, which remain second to none, and remember that the voters that matter are the ones that turn up to the polls. Perhaps surprisingly to many, Democrats lead in early voting in almost every state in the country, with over 16 million Americans having cast their ballots ahead of election day. And there’s some evidence that the polls may not be as accurate this year as they have been in the past.
So this election remains wide open.”
